Recycling of end-of-life polypropylene products

Wed, 10 February, 2021

The ISOPREP project offers an innovative new approach on recycling of end-of-life polypropylene products back into virgin quality polypropylene using ionic liquids.

ISOPREP partner, Bioniqs, is a UK technology start-up, pioneering solvent based polymer recycling. The technology is based around the rational design and formulation of solvents for extraction and purification of polymers, principally using Ionic Liquids.Protic ionic liquids (PILs), essentially 'tuneable‘ organic ammonium salts, are liquid at room temperature, and able to dissolve a range of polymers. They can be designed to be biodegradeable, recyclable, sustainable and, importantly, cost effective.
